About Brovary
The city of Brovary is 22 km from Kyiv.
Brovary is the eastern gate of Kyiv, it is here that roads converged at all times. This is due to the fact that Brovary is located at the junction of two large tracts that have always led to Kyiv from the northeastern territories.
In the XI-XII centuries. the territory of the Brovary region was inhabited by monks from the Kyiv monasteries and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
The name Brovary first appears in written sources in 1628. At that time it was a small settlement. The peasants engaged in agriculture, and the wealthier Cossacks engaged in winemaking and brewing. At that time, Brovary was part of the Ostersky Starosty and belonged to Prince Yaremy Vyshnevetskyi.
There are several versions of the origin of the name. Brewery historians connect the name of the city with the location of a large number of "breweries" here, where beer was brewed, or from the name of the profession of a brewer (that is, one who brews beer). The word "brewery" has a Polish-German origin, in the 17th century. it was already widespread on the territory of Ukraine. Apparently, this is how people who came to the city called people "brewers" (that is, brewers in the plural). That was the name of the city until 1969, ending in -i. And in the poem "Kateryna" T.G. Shevchenko also uses the name Brovary.
You can see a lot of interesting things in the Brovary Museum of Local History.
